A layover at Yu Garden

Most Western passports can leave the airport in Shanghai without a visa in 2026. With seven or eight hours to spare, Yu Garden and the old city are an easy first taste of China.

Two rules decide whether you can walk out of Pudong or Hongqiao without a visa this year: the 240-hour visa-free transit and the 30-day visa-free entry. Between them they cover the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and most of Europe.

Below: which rule fits your passport, the fastest way from each airport to the garden, how many hours you need, and what the private layover tour does and does not cover.

The quick answer

With an onward ticket to a third country, citizens of 57 countries can stay up to 240 hours without a visa. Many European and Asian passports, plus the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand (not the US), can also enter for 30 days visa-free until 31 December 2026. Yu Garden is about 50 minutes from Hongqiao on Line 10 and 60 to 80 minutes from Pudong. It closes on Mondays and admits visitors until 16:00.

Can you visit Yu Garden on a Shanghai layover without a visa in 2026?

Yes, for most Western passports. The 240-hour visa-free transit covers 57 countries, and both Shanghai airports are entry ports.

The conditions, as the Shanghai government sets them out: an ordinary passport valid for at least three more months, and a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region within 240 hours. London to Shanghai to Tokyo works. London to Shanghai and back to London does not. Hong Kong and Macao count as third regions.

Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam joined on 20 August 2026, taking the list to 57 countries and 65 ports in 24 provinces. It includes the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, most of Europe, Japan and South Korea. The clock starts at 00:00 on the day after you land, so a same-day layover sits comfortably inside it. Tell the airline at check-in, then use the transit lane at immigration.

Does the 30-day visa-free entry still apply in 2026?

Yes, until 31 December 2026, for the countries on the extended list. The UK and Canada joined on 17 February 2026. US citizens are not covered.

China extended its one-sided visa waiver for another year in November 2025. The consulate notice lists France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and more, for tourism, business, family visits or transit. Sweden came in from November 2025, the UK and Canada from 17 February 2026, as the Shanghai government's visa-free page confirms.

For these passports a layover is just a short visit: no third-country rule, no special lane. Americans use the 240-hour transit instead. Nothing has been announced for 1 January 2027 onwards as of October 2026. If your stopover falls in early 2027, check again before you fly.

Pickup at Pudong, 80 minutes in Yu Garden and the Bund, then back to the airport in time.

How do you get from Pudong or Hongqiao airport to Yu Garden?

From Hongqiao, Line 10 runs straight to Yuyuan Garden station in about 45 minutes. From Pudong, take Line 2 (or the Maglev, then Line 2) to Lujiazui and change to Line 14 for one stop.

From Hongqiao (SHA): the easiest airport for this trip. Line 10 stops at both Hongqiao terminals and at Yuyuan Garden station. No changes. From the station it is about 10 minutes on foot to the garden gate. A taxi is 35 to 50 minutes and roughly 80 to 110 RMB on the meter, depending on traffic.

From Pudong (PVG): the Maglev runs 30 km to Longyang Road in about 8 minutes, for 50 RMB, or 40 RMB with a same-day air ticket. From Longyang Road, Line 2 goes five stops to Lujiazui, where Line 14 crosses under the river to Yuyuan Garden in one stop. Line 2 also runs through from the airport itself, slower but cheap. A taxi or Didi takes about an hour and costs roughly 180 to 240 RMB; the city's taxi guide explains the meter and night surcharge.

All metro gates and the Maglev take contactless Visa and Mastercard. Our guide on how to get to Yu Garden covers the station exits and the walk.

How long a layover do you need to see Yu Garden?

About 7 hours at Hongqiao and 8 to 9 at Pudong for the garden and a bazaar walk. Land on a Monday or after midday and the garden may be out of reach.

The garden itself takes 60 to 90 minutes. The free bazaar, the Nine-Turn Bridge and a plate of dumplings add another hour. The rest is airport time. Count up to an hour for immigration and bags, and be back for check-in about three hours before an international flight.

Two timing traps. The garden is closed on Mondays except public holidays, and it stops letting people in at 16:00. A Monday layover still works for the bazaar and the Bund, which are free and open late, just not for the garden. If your bags are not checked through, note that the garden has no luggage storage: use the left-luggage desks in Pudong's arrival halls, mostly open 06:00 to midnight, per the Shanghai government.

What does the private layover tour include, and what if you can't clear customs?

Airport pickup, a guide and a car for up to 8 hours, with Yu Garden among the stops. Garden entry and food are extra, and if you cannot get through customs, there is no refund on the day.

The private layover tour by Sunny Private Tours starts at Pudong airport. The listing's stops: the Bund (60 minutes), Yu Garden (80), the former French Concession (50), the Shanghai World Financial Center (60) and Nanjing Road (60). You choose a one-way transfer, a one-way Maglev ride (ticket included) or a two-way transfer. It is priced from $151 per person, tiered by group size, so a solo traveller pays more per head.

Read the small print. Entrance fees are excluded, so the guide buys your garden ticket at the gate (30 or 40 RMB) and you pay it back. Tips, food and drinks are extra, and anything past 8 hours is charged by the hour. On a Monday the 80 minutes go elsewhere. The key line: "If you are not able to go through customs for any reasons, please take your own responsibility. There is no refund for the same day cancellation." Free cancellation up to 24 hours before still applies, so cancel the day before if your inbound flight looks shaky.

Guests report it bending to short stops too. Heidi wrote: "I had a fantastic tour of Shanghai with Annie who expertly crammed the whole experience into 3 hours as my layover was quick." Christine, on a 15-hour layover: "Due to my flight time I choose the option with 2 way driver to and from the airport. The instructions for pick up were clear and everything ran on time."

What should you sort out before leaving the airport?

Payment, data and proof of your onward flight. With those three, the rest of a layover is easy.

Link a foreign Visa or Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly, and keep some cash. Get an eSIM or roaming that reaches your maps and your airline's app. Keep a screenshot of the onward booking: immigration may ask for it, and so may your guide at pickup.

At the garden, tickets are sold at both gates and in the "上海豫园" WeChat mini-program; no reservation is required. Paths are uneven, with steps, bridges and rockeries, so wheel a suitcase there and you will regret it. Our tour or DIY guide weighs the metro against a guide if you are tired off a long-haul flight.
